How To Use The Colored Lens’ Online Submission Engine

Step 1: Register for an Author Account
In order to access our online submission engine, you will need an account. To set up this account we will need your name (or pen name), email address, mailing address, and a brief bio. This helps us cut down on spammers and ensures we are able to communicate with you should the need arise.

Step 2: Log In To Your Account
Once you have an account set up, log in to your account.

Step 3: Submit Your Story
Once you have an account set up, click the link on the left column of the website to submit your story.

Step 4: Fill Out The Story Submission Form
Copy and paste your story title into the Title section, your story into the Body.

Don’t forget to use standard manuscript formatting when submitting your story, but be aware that rich text is (intentionally) stripped out by our submission engine. Italics, underlined text, and bold text are removed. Use HTML or manuscript formatting.

Once you are satisfied, click the “Save” button at the top right to enter your story into the database for an editor to review.

Step 5: Check Back To Keep Up With Your Story’s Status
You should receive emails notifying you as your story makes its way through our editorial process. You can also log back into the Submission Engine from time to time to check on your story’s status.

I don’t want to create an account. Can I just email you my story?
We strongly encourage authors to use our online submission form. Doing so allows you to track your story’s progress through the editorial process as it is read, considered, possibly held, held, etc. Stories sent by email have to be input into the online submission form by us, and this means it will be entered behind the other stories already in the database. Thus email submissions will not receive responses as quickly as submissions through the online submission form. However, if for some reason you are unable to enter it through the online submission form, you can simply email us your story at Please paste the story into the body of the email as inline text. Do not use any attachments as they will not be opened or read. The subject of the email should read “author name – title.”

My submission is non-fiction. Should I use the online submission engine?

Your site doesn’t look right. Some fields are missing, the layout is messed up, and I’m having trouble registering and/or submitting my story. What’s going on?
Our site is optimized for use in Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, and Safari. Unfortunately, it does NOT work well in Internet Explorer. I registered for your site, but I never received my password via email!
Check your spam folders. Our site sends out a large number of automated emails on a daily basis when stories are updated, or when new authors register for the site. Sometimes email services such as Gmail or Hotmail flag them as spam and dump them into your spam folder. Check there first before emailing us.

What happened to my story? I submitted it but never heard anything after that.
You will receive an email as your story moves through our evaluation process. If you do not get an email within 48-hours of submitting your story, check your spam folder. Automated emails are sent out notifying authors when their story is being reviewed by an editor, and again when a decision has been made to hold or reject that story. You can also log back in to the submission database and view the updated status of your story online.
